Landau Inaugurates Production Platform of Tamar Project
Published on: December 30, 2012Energy and Water Minister Dr. Uzi Landau this week inaugurated the production platform of the “Tamar” natural gas reservoir.
Tamar’s production platform, at a height of 290 meters and weight of 34,000 tons, will pump natural gas from the Tamar reservoir through the Tamar pipeline to Israel. The gas will be pumped from 90 miles west of Haifa to a reception point in Ashdod. The platform will employ approximately 20 people.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Minister Landau said, “This project is the greatest ever growth engine for our economy. Just a few days ago, Bank of Israel Governor Stanley Fischer increased the growth forecast of the economy because of the projectedgas production from Tamar. It is not often that a government minister is privileged to reap the fruits of his labor. I am proud and humbled to see this happening during my term. Not only will domestic gas production make electricity more efficient, cleaner and cheaper, it is also a huge step toward ending our dependence on foreign energy sources and especially on Arab oil. These gas reservoirs may be thousands of feet below the sea floor, but in terms of their potential, the sky’s the limit.”
Construction is expected to be completed by April 2013.
